The challenge came as calls grew for immediate action to de-rail Allan Leighton’s bid to privatise the company and Postcomm threatens to tighten its stranglehold on the industry. At a fringe meeting during CWU conference week in Blackpool, union leaders gave Blair until September to guarantee Royal Mail’s future as a state-owned company. It was the first sign that the membership want rapid action to safeguard jobs and cast a shadow over the National Executive Council’s plan to give Blair and his government until May next year before considering cutting the link between the union and the Labour Party. NEC member Norman Candy warned that time is already running out in the battle to save Royal Mail from the City vultures who are waiting expectantly for Leighton’s privatisation package to be announced. “This union is facing the biggest issue since privatisation of British Telecom. Just over 50 per cent of members voted to take action in line with the NEC – but 100 per cent are in favour of doing something about privatisation.” London Divisional Rep Martin Walsh said the first action must be to give the Prime Minister a bloody nose if he fails to act on his election promise to keep Royal Mail in the public sector. He said:” People are beginning to insist that the Labour Party and the Labour government are held to account. We believe there is a timescale for privatisation – and time is running out. Allan Leighton has told his managers the privatisation issue will be sorted out by September.” In 1994 we defeated privatisation with the ‘Stand by Post’ campaign and in 1994 Blair said he would stop privatisation. We now want him to live up to his pre-election promise to keep Royal Mail in the public sector. “We have no desire to break the link with the Labour Party but we want the government to commit to its promise.” Mark Baulch, London Divisional Rep warned members who were tempted by Allan Leighton’s offer of shares in his new, private Royal Mail they could pay the price in the future. “Any short term gain will lead to long term pain,” he said. ”It is alright taking the money today, but what about the long term future? Allan Leighton’s share in success style deals are nothing more than short term gain for long term pain.” And he launched a savage attack on Postcomm for its role in the catastrophic shake-up of Royal Mail. “Postcomm is just looking after it mates in the city,” he said. “They are not interested in the public – they are interested in big posting, big mail outs. Next year there is going to be some sort of deal with Postcomm and movement on the share issue – in the long term that is going to mean full privatisation.” Mr.Baulch also said Tony Blair could be left facing a huge dilemma when confronted with the demand to live up to his election promises – he recently signed Allan Leighton for another three year to the Royal mail hotseat. He said:” Allan Leighton has been given a three year extension to his contract so by pushing for privatisation he is carrying out government policy.”
