Winning public support is the key to winning the battle to beat privatisation and liberalisation, according to NEC member Garry Hanna. He claimed that once the public were aware of the pressure on Tony Blair to scrap Leighton’s privatisation plans would intensify. He said:” The way to defeat liberalisation and full blown privatisation is to win public support for our campaign. Liberalisation will undoubtedly lead to a decline in services and once the public get that message that is when we will put pressure on Labour. “Politically, privatisation will be indefensible.” London region political officer Alan Tait urged union members to lobby their MPs about the crisis facing postal workers. “There is little time to play with,” he said. “We need to use our political structures to get an Early Day Motion put before the Labour government. We have only got a matter of weeks before the dissolution of Parliament. Union members have got to lobby their MPs and we must target the growing number of MPs who regularly vote against the government. “There is a lot to be achieved – we must be holding a debate with MPs. This issue must be taken to the Labour Party Conference. We also need to harness the support of other trade union officals.
